Principles and Selection Guide of Industrial Basket Strainers

Basket strainers act as the "guardians" of piping systems. By using a simple physical filtration process, they effectively remove particulate impurities - such as rust, welding slag, silt, and crystals - from liquids or gases, protecting downstream equipment like pumps, valves, heat exchangers, and flow meters from wear, damage, and blockage. Thanks to their simple structure, large flow area, low pressure drop, high dirt-holding capacity, and easy cleaning and maintenance, basket strainers are widely used and highly reliable components in industrial pipeline systems.

1. Structure and Working Principle

Basket strainers mainly consist of a housing, filter basket, sealing system, and drain device. The housing is the pressure-bearing core of the unit and can be manufactured from reinforced PPH (polypropylene homopolymer), carbon steel, or 304/316 stainless steel to accommodate different pressure ratings and corrosive environments. The filter basket is the heart of the filtration process. It is typically made of perforated plate or metal mesh and is designed for easy removal, allowing convenient cleaning or replacement. Different filtration ratings can be selected according to specific application requirements.

The sealing system uses materials such as NBR, EPDM, or fluororubber, depending on the operating temperature and chemical properties of the medium, ensuring long-term, leak-free performance. A drain device located at the bottom allows accumulated impurities to be discharged periodically without dismantling the entire unit, simplifying maintenance. Overall, the structure is compact, robust, and reliable.

During operation, fluid enters the housing through the inlet and flows evenly across the filter basket. Particles larger than the mesh openings are retained inside the basket, while the cleaned liquid or gas exits through the outlet. As impurities accumulate over time, the pressure differential between the inlet and outlet gradually increases. When this differential reaches a preset value, draining or cleaning is required. Maintenance can be carried out either by opening the drain valve for quick discharge or by removing the top cover and extracting the basket for thorough cleaning. For systems that require continuous operation, a duplex (dual-basket) configuration can be used, allowing one basket to remain in service while the other is cleaned, ensuring uninterrupted production.

2. PPH Plastic Basket Strainer

PPH Plastic Basket Strainers are ideal for low-to-medium pressure and corrosive liquid applications. The main body is made of PPH reinforced polypropylene through a single injection molding process, resulting in a robust structure with no welds or dead corners and excellent sealing performance. It is widely used in chemical, water treatment, and general industrial liquid systems, making it an economical and cost-effective choice for light industrial and municipal water treatment pipelines.

This material is resistant to acids and alkalis, corrosion, and has a certain degree of temperature resistance, making it suitable for both corrosive and non-corrosive media. The equipment is lightweight, facilitating transportation and installation. The filter basket is easy to disassemble, clean, and replace, resulting in low maintenance costs. The one-piece molding design reduces the risk of internal sediment buildup, improves filtration efficiency and operational stability, and is ideal for low-to-medium flow, low-to-medium pressure pipeline systems at normal temperatures, making it an economical and practical pipeline filtration solution.

3. Stainless Steel Basket Strainers

The Stainless Steel Basket Strainers are specifically designed for high-pressure, high-temperature, and high-flow industrial systems. The main body can be made of carbon steel, 304 or 316 stainless steel, and customized production is supported. Its robust structure and large filter basket area effectively reduce pressure drop while ensuring high-efficiency filtration, enabling it to withstand harsh operating conditions and ensure stable system operation.

The top cover can be designed with a swing bolt or hinge for quick opening, facilitating daily maintenance. The filter basket is made of a high-strength perforated plate frame, capable of withstanding large pressure differentials without deformation, supporting reuse, and significantly extending its service life. Steel Basket Strainers have a wide range of flow diameters, with filtration accuracy from 10μm to 5000μm, meeting various needs from coarse to fine filtration. They are a reliable protection solution for pipeline systems in petrochemical, seawater desalination, power plant circulating water, and high-concentration chemical media.

4. Selection Principles

The selection of Basket Strainers requires comprehensive consideration of factors such as media properties, pressure and temperature, flow rate and pipe diameter, filtration accuracy, and production continuity. For corrosive media, 316 stainless steel or PPH plastic materials are recommended to ensure long-term stable operation. Under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, steel Basket Strainers are essential to withstand harsh conditions. PPH plastic filters are more economical and practical for small to medium flow rates and normal temperature systems; for large flow main pipelines, steel models are recommended to ensure stable throughput and safety.

For applications requiring high-precision filtration, steel Basket Strainers are more suitable, offering a wider filtration accuracy range to meet various needs from coarse to fine filtration. For continuous production systems, a dual-basket structure can be selected, allowing for alternating operation and maintenance of two units to ensure uninterrupted operation. During installation, ensure correct flow direction and reliable flange connections. Regularly monitor the inlet and outlet pressure difference during operation, and promptly drain or clean the filter baskets as needed to extend equipment life and ensure stable and efficient pipeline system operation.

5. Application

PPH plastic and SS basket strainers are widely used in industrial piping systems. They can be used in petrochemical raw material transportation, water pre-treatment systems, power plant circulating cooling water, seawater desalination plants, and various industrial liquid pipelines. Simultaneously, these two types of filters are also suitable for the metallurgical, paper-making, food and pharmaceutical, and general manufacturing industries, providing stable and reliable protection for piping systems.

Selecting the appropriate material and structural form based on different media characteristics and operating conditions can significantly improve the safety and operational stability of the piping system. Correct selection not only ensures the long-term reliable operation of downstream pumps, valves, heat exchangers, and other critical equipment but also extends the service life of the filter itself. Whether in light or heavy industry, municipal water treatment, or high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, basket strainers provide efficient, low-maintenance filtration solutions for the system.
